The Herring Road: A Beautiful Hike from Castletown to Peel

The Isle of Man is a beautiful destination with a variety of landscapes that are perfect for hiking. One of the most scenic hikes on the island is the Bayr Ny Skeddan/Herring Road, a 26-kilometer trail that runs from Castletown to Peel. This Easter weekend, we decided to take on this incredible journey and explore the natural beauty of the island.

Peel Hill. Hiking & Walking
The view from Peel Hill

We started our hike at Castletown Harbour, where we were greeted with a stunning sunrise by Castle Rushen and the sea. We then walked alongside the Silverburn River through Poulsom Park, enjoying the company of rabbits and horses along the way. The trail then took us to Silverdale Glen, where we passed the boating lake and ducks, and continued through the glen onto a kilometer stretch up the Ballamodha.

As we turned left onto a farm lane, the terrain became muddy, and we were glad we had our wellington boots on. The hike continued as we joined the bottom of the Whiskey Run. We walked up the Whiskey Run with Cringle Plantation on one side and South Barrule on the other. The views were breathtaking, and we were in awe of the natural beauty of the island.

We continued along the Whiskey Run path to the base of South Barrule, where we stopped for a small picnic. The scenery was incredible, and we couldn't resist taking some photos to capture the moment. We then continued along the trail down the Pipeline Path until we reached Glen Maye, a perfect spot for a snack break. There were also public toilets available here, which was a welcome relief.

From Glen Maye, we joined the Raad ny Foillan footpath along the west coastline. We were treated to stunning views from Niarbyl through the northern beaches, and we could see Greeba Mountain and Colden in the distance. The coastal path was beautiful, and we hugged the cliffs, enjoying great views of the waves and beaches below.

Our hike ended in Peel, where we were greeted by the majestic Peel Castle. We finished our hike with a box of chips and an ice cream and exchanged stories from our adventure. The hike was challenging but rewarding, and we felt accomplished and exhilarated by the end of it.

Overall, the Herring Road is a must-do hike for anyone visiting the Isle of Man. The trail offers breathtaking views of the island's natural beauty and diverse landscapes. If you are planning a trip to the Isle of Man, be sure to add the Herring Way to your itinerary. You won't be disappointed.
